Yes, you need to backpack the Grand Canyon to truly see it. And yes, you should probably plan on submitting backpack reservations a year or so in advance. But let's face it. Most of us don't visit the Grand Canyon like that. We get to the south, or less frequently the north rim, and then explore for as long as we can. And the best way to do so is with a guidebook like this. Stewart Adkison wrote the earlier editions of this book, but he has since passed away. Happily his son Ben has taken on the responsibility of updating this book (and many other guidebooks Adkison wrote on desert hiking). The result is a new edition featuring all the classic short day hikes you can take when you visit the park.You will probably be pleasantly surprised to find that this book will even take you away from the crowds. Shoshone Point is a lightly travelled trail, and the routes departing from Hermit's Rest trail head are lightly travelled. But this book reverses visitation at the park, and you should too. The bulk of the good hiking in the Park is along the north rim. But most people don't visit there. Try it anyway, and you'll be amazed at how beautiful and pleasant these trails are, even in summer.Falcon Guides have a lot of standard features that will make trails easy to navigate for anyone who is new to the area. Each trail has clear directions to the trail head, a good route description with point by point mileage, and a decent sketch map. You won't be either disappointed or lost. Using earlier editions of this book I've hiked all but two of the routes described in this book, exploring both the north and south rims. I loved every one. And reading the new edition reminds me that I need to visit again. I was disappointed to receive this book and find out that it was so lacking in any information that I couldn't get on the Grand Canyon visitor sites. Also, the booklet only uses approximately a third of its pages for the south rim area which is where the vast majority of people visit. The other 2/3s was devoted to the north rim and may prove useful to those traveling to the remote region of the Grand Canyon. Then again the information on the websites may have already covered that area as well.
